ECE 22.06 Helmet Supplier Checks After a Safety Gate Alert
Review a motorcycle helmet after an EU Safety Gate alert: match the exact model, approval evidence, markings and production changes before shipment.
An EU Safety Gate alert can make a helmet buyer nervous, especially when the product photograph looks similar to something already under discussion with a supplier. The useful response is not to panic, and it is not to accept a quick message saying, “Our model is different.” The useful response is to slow down and identify exactly what the alert covers.
Safety Gate is the EU rapid alert system for dangerous non-food products. An alert normally identifies a product, the reported risk and measures taken. It is evidence about the product described in that notice; it is not proof that every visually similar helmet has the same problem.
Start with identity, not appearance
Two helmets can share a shell shape and still differ in approval status, visor, retention system, liner or production source. Begin by recording the alert reference, brand, model, photographs, markings and the authority’s stated reason for action.
Then ask the supplier for the exact commercial model and the exact approval documentation offered for your order. Compare the model shown on the quotation, product label, approval communication and sample. If the names or codes differ, ask for a written explanation before discussing price or packaging.
This is where many sourcing conversations become vague. A supplier may send a valid document, but a valid document is useful only when it can be connected to the configuration you intend to buy.
My preference is simple: pause the quotation for one more document check rather than discover after production that the sample and the approval file describe different configurations.
Check the configuration you are actually ordering
UN Regulation No. 22 covers protective helmets and their visors for motorcycle and moped users. The approval material distinguishes helmet types and visor types, and it contains procedures for approval, markings and changes to an approved type.
For an importer, that means checking more than the shell name. Record the visor option, retention system, shell material, size range and any accessory that forms part of the quoted configuration. If the supplier proposes a material change, a different visor or a new factory, ask whether the existing approval still applies and request supporting confirmation from the relevant approval holder or authority.
What to request before shipment
A practical file for one helmet model may include:
- The approval communication or other model-specific approval evidence.
- Clear photographs of the approval marking on the production sample.
- The final specification agreed in the purchase order.
- Confirmation of the visor and retention-system configuration.
- A change record for any material or component substitution.
- Pre-shipment photographs that allow the ordered model to be matched to its documents.
The purpose is not to collect the largest possible folder. It is to create a short chain of evidence that another person can follow without guessing.
Treat the alert as a trigger for a focused review
Do not copy the alert’s conclusion onto another model. Do not assume that a familiar factory name settles the question. And do not rely on a catalogue page when the order specification has changed.
